About Carry Gently

Our Story

Carry Gently was established in 1984 by David Hurst and Michael Kennedy who combined the expertise they had gained in different areas of the transport business to create a company capable of meeting the specialist transport needs of the then rapidly developing technology industries. Sadly, Michael died in 2011 but David remains involved in the business to this day.

From modest beginnings (a back-bedroom in Guildford and a “fleet” of 2 vehicles) Carry Gently has evolved into a modern enterprise and leading provider of specialist transportation and support services.

The Company’s Head Office is in Aldershot, Hampshire and there is also a depot in Manchester. Both locations provide combined secure storage capacity of 25,000 sq ft. Employing a staff of around 28 and operating a fleet of 17 specialist vehicles, the Company provides services throughout the UK and Europe. Carry Gently has ISO 9001 registration, is a member of the Road Haulage Association and also the United Kingdom Warehousing Association.

Investing in Our People

At Carry Gently we recognise that the performance of our staff defines what we are as a company. Accordingly, we place significant emphasis on training and continuing personal development to ensure we can continue to meet the changing demands of our market. Staff are trained in a diverse range of skills, for example: Manual Handling; Defensive Driving; Electric Stair climber use; Health and Safety Awareness; Site Management; and Customer Service.

Our experienced workforce at Carry Gently is motivated by and rewarded for individual performance and the results achieved by working as part of a successful team. At an average term of employment of over 15 years per employee, combined with a strict policy of not engaging subcontracted or agency drivers, our customers benefit from this continuity of personnel by seeing a consistently high quality of service delivered. However, while we are proud of our record of staff retention, we also fully recognise and welcome the initiatives and fresh thinking new employees bring to our organisation.

Security Clearance

The need for Security Checked staff to be deployed is self-evident for installations at security-sensitive sites and for transits involving the movement of IT hardware/media containing confidential customer information. Every member of Carry Gently staff has been Security Checked in accordance with HM Government Defence Business Services (National Security Vetting) procedures. This is often referred to as SC Clearance. Please stipulate any requirement for Security Checked staff at the time of booking in order that the prescribed formalities can be completed in advance of the work commencing.

The majority of staff also have the Cargo Aviation Security Principles (CASP) Level D accreditation.

Health & Safety / Risk Management

Site Surveys, Method Statements, Risk Assessments and Migration Security Plans are key elements of the pre-implementation planning phase for certain moves or projects. They are also vital to ensuring the correct resources are deployed to complete work safely and in compliance with relevant Health and Safety legislation, first time round. Where necessary our surveyor will liaise with the customer’s own Health and Safety representative to discuss survey findings and to ensure the requirements of both parties are met. Our documentation is comprehensive and reports are normally provided within 24 hours of a survey being carried out.

Surveys etc will not always be required but in certain cases we will insist on undertaking a survey in order to comply with our fundamental duty of care to our staff and our insurers. The cost of something going wrong, or us not being unable to complete a job because the customer didn’t provide the correct information, will always far outweigh the cost of a survey.

Environmental Responsibilities

At Carry Gently we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously. Furthermore, we recognise that with an ever-increasing emphasis on commercial ethics, customers are not prepared to risk their own reputations by engaging with suppliers who do not share and subscribe to their own values.

So, from significant investment in fleet modernisation using vehicles with modern Euro VI engines, to making sure all waste packing materials are separated and recycled, Carry Gently does all it can to create an environmentally aware workplace where all staff share a collective responsibility to minimise the environmental impact from our operations.
